SCHOTT Solar AG and Merck KgaA are leading a consortium that will work to develop flexible organic solar cells and modules. Consortium partners include Konarka Technologies, VARTA Microbattery GmbH and various institutes at the universities of Ilmenau, Karlsruhe and Oldenburg, as well as the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has announced its support for the project and provided annual funding of nearly EUR 2 million over the next four years. The project will focus on increasing the efficiency of organic components to at least 10%, as well as demonstrating that these cells can be produced using a cost-effective printing process.
