SPECMAT's patented technology is used within the PV cell manufacturing line and creates a silicon oxide-based anti-reflective coating (ARC). According to the companies, the technology increases light capture through the ARC, lowers plant and operating costs, increases manufacturing throughput and yield and improves cell efficiency. These benefits are achieved at room temperature using a wet chemical process.
The technology was invented by SPECMAT CEO Dr. Maria Faur while working on a research project with NASA's Glenn Research Center. NASA has non-commercial rights to the patented technology - jointly owned by NASA and SPECMAT - that has been licensed by Equity Solar. Equity Solar has requested an assignment of NASA's undivided interest in the jointly developed patent.
