Defeat Of Prop. 23 Preserves California’s Climate-Change Law

Voters in California have rejected Proposition 23, which would have suspended implementation of A.B.32, the state's greenhouse gas (GHG)-reduction law, until state unemployment stayed at or below 5.5% for four consecutive quarters.

A.B.32, signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006, sets GHG-reduction targets of reducing emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

According to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a co-sponsor of A.B.32, the defeat of Prop. 23, is a ‘clear win’ for the climate and for clean energy jobs.

‘If America follows California's lead, it can be one of the biggest winners in this growing, multibillion-dollar economy,’ says EDF California Climate Initiative Director Derek Walker. ‘Our energy, economic and environmental future depends on us seizing this opportunity.’
