As part of an initiative designed to promote scientific research in the U.S., President Obama and the Department of Energy (DOE) have launched a $400 million Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). ARPA-E is a new DOE organization modeled after the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
