Colorado State University Unveils 2 MW Solar Project

Colorado State University (CSU) has dedicated a 2 MW solar project on the university's Foothills Campus. The solar power plant is owned and operated by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures and features more than 8,000 Trina Solar panels.

Each year, Xcel Energy solicits bids for solar installations to meet the solar energy mandates of the Colorado's renewable portfolio standard, which is 20% by 2020. CSU partnered with Fotowatio Renewable Ventures to submit a bid to Xcel for a 2 MW installation, which was one of three bids selected by Xcel.

This is the second solar project to be announced within the Colorado State University System, as CSUPueblo dedicated a 1.2 MW solar array in 2008.

According to Tony Frank, president of CSU, the new project will save the university more than $2 million in electric costs over the term of the 20-year power purchase agreement and will meet more than 10% of the Foothills Campus' electricity demand.
