New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities has voted to reject all new applications for solar rebates, but will fund all applications on the current rebates waiting list.
Under the board's plan, residential rebate applicants for proposed solar systems of 10 kW or less will be fully funded, while applicants for larger systems will be eligible for rebates up to $245,000. The board has set aside $391 million to compensate the pending rebate applications.
According to the Bergen Record, the board's decision to turn down new applications was based on its desire to move New Jersey's solar industry activities into a free market arena.
Joseph Fiordaliso, the board's commissioner, was quoted by the Record as stating, "Ultimately, government has to get out of the business. It's time to move onto a free market system."
