Kyocera TCL Developing Floating Solar Power Plants In Japan

0

Kyocera TCL Solar LLC, a joint partnership of Kyocera Corp. and Century Tokyo Leasing Corp., will begin construction this month on two floating solar installations with a combined capacity of 2.9 MW on reservoirs in Kato City, Japan.

The company says the 1.7 MW plant planned for Nishihira Pond will become the world's largest solar power generating system installed on water. The companion facility on Higashihira Pond will have a capacity of 1.2 MW.

Century Tokyo Leasing will finance the installations and the Kyocera Group will undertake the supply of solar modules and related equipment, in addition to construction, maintenance and operation. France-based Ciel et Terre will be responsible for the supply of floating solar platforms as well as engineering support for installing the systems on water. The two projects are expected to enter operation in April 2015.

According to Kyocera TCL Solar, the rapid implementation of solar power in Japan has made securing tracts of land suitable for utility-scale solar power plants more difficult. Due to great variation in the amount of rainfall by season, there are many reservoirs throughout Japan for agricultural and flood-control purposes. Thus, Kyocera TCL Solar sees an opportunity in developing floating solar power facilities in addition to its ground-mount and roof-mounted commercial array businesses.
